History[ edit ] The school took its name from Elea Ancient Greek: Its foundation is often attributed to Xenophanes of Colophon , but, although there is much in his speculations which formed part of the later Eleatic doctrine, it is probably more correct to regard Parmenides as the founder of the school. Parmenides developed some of Xenophanes’s metaphysical ideas. Subsequently, the school debated the possibility of motion and other such fundamental questions.
The work of the school was influential upon Platonic metaphysics. Philosophy[ edit ] The Eleatics rejected the epistemological validity of sense experience , and instead took logical standards of clarity and necessity to be the criteria of truth. Of the members, Parmenides and Melissus built arguments starting from sound premises. Zeno, on the other hand, primarily employed the reductio ad absurdum , attempting to destroy the arguments of others by showing that their premises led to contradictions Zeno’s paradoxes.
The main doctrines of the Eleatics were evolved in opposition to the theories of the early physicalist philosophers, who explained all existence in terms of primary matter , and to the theory of Heraclitus , which declared that all existence may be summed up as perpetual change. The Eleatics maintained that the true explanation of things lies in the conception of a universal unity of being.
According to their doctrine, the senses cannot cognize this unity, because their reports are inconsistent; it is by thought alone that we can pass beyond the false appearances of sense and arrive at the knowledge of being, at the fundamental truth that the “All is One”. Furthermore, there can be no creation , for being cannot come from non-being, because a thing cannot arise from that which is different from it.
They argued that errors on this point commonly arise from the ambiguous use of the verb to be, which may imply actual physical existence or be merely the linguistic copula which connects subject and predicate. Though the conclusions of the Eleatics were rejected by the later Presocratics and Aristotle , their arguments were taken seriously, and they are generally credited with improving the standards of discourse and argument in their time.

Niccolo Machiavelli Dear Machiavelli, My friends want to throw me a bachelor party. Knowing them, it will involve strippers, booze, drugs, the works. What should I do? Signed, Tempted My Liege, I am unsure how to advise you in this instance, for your status in this world has much bearing on the matter. Are you a common man, or are you a prince? For it is well known that those actions which are considered most virtuous in a common man are in fact a vice in a prince, and that which would be vice for the lowest laborer is in fact raised to holy virtue when undertaken by a prince.
Be you of the lower classes, stay true to your course and all will be well. Be you my liege, I pray you, indulge yourself. I know tradition calls for flowers and chocolates, but do modern ladies still go for that sort of thing?

These are K-Ar data obtained on glauconite, a potassium-bearing clay mineral that forms in some marine sediment. Woodmorappe fails to mention, however, that these data were obtained as part of a controlled experiment to test, on samples of known age, the applicability of the K-Ar method to glauconite and to illite, another clay mineral. He also neglects to mention that most of the 89 K-Ar ages reported in their study agree very well with the expected ages.

References and Further Reading 1. Fundamental Questions on the Nature and Composition of Reality Western philosophy often takes the theory of reality ontology as equivalent to metaphysics, but this term does not fit for Chinese philosophy as it implies there is something beyond nature that creates and guides reality from the outside. While Chinese philosophical thought has a wide variety of ontologies, it has not stressed metaphysics in the traditional Western sense.

Some Greek sentences admit of several fundamentally different grammatical construals with widely differing senses, and many ancient Greek words have no neat English equivalents. A notable artifact of the work of translators and scholars is a device of selective capitalization sometimes employed in English. Others have employed a variant of this convention in which capitalization is used to indicate a special way in which Plato is supposed to have thought of the forms during a certain period i.
Still others do not use capital letters for any such purpose. Readers will do best to keep in mind that such devices are in any case only suggestions. In recent centuries there have been some changes in the purpose and style of English translations of ancient philosophy.
