I don’t know if I’m tone deaf or what, but I am having a hell of a time trying to tune my drums. I’ve printed off two different sets of directions the “bible” and another “quick” method, both posted here , and tried both with no luck. I just can’t seem to get from one lug to the next, let alone clear the entire head. I can’t even imagine trying to tune both heads to the same pitch! I have never studied music or played any other instruments, so I am sure my ear is not great, but I think I can tell when two pitches are different and which one is higher! I’m doing the “press in the middle, tap back and forth between two lugs” method, and no matter how small of a turn I try to give a lug, I seem to go from “hi-lo” to “lo-hi” without ever getting both lugs to be at the same pitch. If I’m trying to clear lugs A and B, and B is lower in pitch, then as I tighten B it seems like the overall pitch increases but A stays a little higher than B. Maybe I’m getting ear fatigue and lose the ability to distinguish tones, or maybe my 30 year old drums are warped and it’s impossible to clear them.
Is there a correlation between the cut badge in this particular time period and COBs? Also, if the sticker inside wasn’t there, is there another way to tell the date? By that, I mean having a cut badge doesn’t raise the probability that the drum shell is COB very much. And that probability is low although I don’t know what it is. The converse might be true:

In , a metal snare guard was offered that could be attached to a Super-Ludwig drum to protect the mechanism from damage. By the guards were standard equipment on all Super-Ludwig drums and various versions would see use over the next 50 years or so. That was the year that owner William F. Ludwig made the decision to sell his company to the C. Conn Company of Indianapolis, Indiana makers of Leedy drums. Both companies now had manufacturing operations in the Leedy factory building.

The Ludwig Supra Phonic snare drum is one of the most popular snare drums of all time. It was used extensively on records by rock and jazz drummers of the fifties, sixties and seventies. Who knows how many hundreds of thousands of them were made over six decades?
The Supralites caught me my surprise. I did the deed: My car sat in a tow-away zone. Should I exercise prudence or go for my gut feeling about this well-chromed pair of nowadays slightly eccentric sized steel drums? Drums this well-built, harnessing this much attitude and raw projection are rare and virtually non-existent at this price point.

For the more “toned down” stuff Iplay now I’m kicking an old 20″ Slingerland that is beaten to hell and missing parts, but still sounds great. Recently, I picked up a Catalina Club kit and plan to use the 18″ as my main set-up. I really wanted a small kit, and the 18″ will be fine in most situations. Since I will never get rid of my 22″ Rogers, I have a bigger drum when needed. So, I went with 2 drums instead of 1. With a 20″, there a few times when I would need anything bigger. As far as setup goes, with the 20″ is a lot easier to work with.
I keep my toms low, too. The 18″ is just like the 20″do to the BD lifter. My first pick would be Gretsch not the Catalinas , then DW.
He was noted for his unique style and his eccentric, often self-destructive behaviour. His drumming continues to be praised by critics and musicians. He was posthumously inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in , becoming only the second rock drummer to be chosen, and in , Moon was voted the second-greatest drummer in history by a Rolling Stone readers’ poll.
Ludwig 14″ x 5″ Supraphonic. TAMA kit in great shape, well taken care of and with a relatively new snare skin (REMO Emperor Coated). Also comes with an extra stand that holds a tambourine and a cowbell not seen in the pictures. We have drums dating back to the beginning of the kit. Everybody, especially drummers or would be.
Nice work, I bow at the feet of the Acro-Master! Seroiusly, that was well organized and quite informational, thanks! You are the man! No wait, You are the Ludwig man! While this is neither here nor there, since it is what it is, I thought I would show what I found while giving it the old once over. I have found that if the Leather Washer is compressed for long periods of time they have a tendency to dry out in a compressed state and when the pressure is released you can end up with a loose, or sloppy, Plate that not only can, but will rattle.

Moon’s Classic Red Sparkle Premier setup comprised two 14xinch bass drums, three 8×14 mounted toms, one 16×16 floor tom, a 5×14 Ludwig Supraphonic snare and one extra floor tom of different sizes but mainly 16×18 or 16x
He was hyperactive as a boy, with a restless imagination and a particular fondness for The Goon Show and music. Moon attended Alperton Secondary Modern School after failing his eleven plus exam , which precluded his attending a grammar school. Idiotic in other respects”. His music teacher wrote that Moon “has great ability, but must guard against a tendency to show off. He left school at age fourteen, around Easter in His favourite musicians were jazz artists, particularly Gene Krupa whose flamboyant style he subsequently copied.
